How to research online earning programs, companies, founders, etc.
to protect yourself from being scammed.
Research the Program:
- Check reviews and testimonials: Look for independent reviews on platforms like Trustpilot, Reddit, or niche forums. Be wary of overly generic or overwhelmingly positive reviews, as they may be fake-I found this to be especially true on TrustPilot. Do not use TrustPilot as your only source.
- Verify results: Investigate whether the program’s promised outcomes are realistic and consistent with industry norms.
- Search for scam alerts: Type the program name along with terms like “scam,” “complaints,” or “fraud” to uncover any potential issues.
Research the Company:
- Check the Better Business Bureau (BBB): Look for the company’s BBB rating and see if there are complaints filed against it. Also look for the company’s information. Just because a company is not listed on the BBB does not mean it is not a legitimate and trustworthy company, and vise versa. Just because a company is listed on the BBB does not mean they are trustworthy. Businesses pay the BBB to get an A+ rating. Only use the BBB to see if there any complaints, and to obtain owner information.
- Search for legal actions: Use public records or news sources to see if the company or founders of the company have been involved in lawsuits or regulatory actions.
- Evaluate their website: A poorly designed website, lack of contact information, lots of dead links, or unprofessional content may indicate a lack of credibility.
Research the Founders of the Company/Program:
- Verify credentials: Look into the founders’ professional history on platforms like LinkedIn or Google. Cross-check their claims about education, experience, and accomplishments.
- Search for controversies: Look for news articles or online discussions about the founders, especially regarding unethical practices.
- Check social media presence: Legitimate founders often have active, professional profiles. Beware of profiles with few followers, inconsistencies, or an overly sales-driven tone.
Examine Marketing Tactics:
- Look for high-pressure sales tactics: Claims like “limited spots” or “one-time offers” can be used to manipulate you into acting quickly without researching.
- Be cautious of overhyped claims: Promises of “guaranteed success” or “making millions overnight” are often unrealistic.
- Assess transparency: Are the program’s pricing, terms, and conditions clearly stated? If not, this could be a red flag. Many programs start out at $7 or some other inexpensive price, but quickly turn into pitches for thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars. There truly is no end to the testimonies of people losing thousands to online “gurus” promising huge quick rewards. Buyer beware. Research, research, research.
Ask Questions:
- Contact support: Reach out to the company or program directly to ask detailed questions. Vague or evasive answers are a red flag.
- Seek testimonials: Request to speak to current or past participants. Genuine programs often provide references or examples of success.
Utilize Third-Party Resources:
- Search government databases: Check if the company or program is registered or has filed any trademarks, patents, or business licenses.
- Join forums and communities: Engage with online groups in the program’s niche. Community members often share honest opinions and experiences.
- Use tools like WHOIS: Look up the website’s registration date and owner to verify legitimacy.
Reflect on Presentation/Webinar:
- List inconsistencies: Compare what was promised during the presentation with what is offered in writing.
- Identify emotional appeals: Recognize when they are using emotional manipulation rather than concrete facts to persuade you.
- Evaluate professionalism: Were the speakers knowledgeable, or did they rely heavily on buzzwords and vague success stories?
- Consider your comfort level: If anything feels off or too good to be true, proceed with caution.
- Take your time: Avoid rushing into decisions. A credible program will allow you to take the time to evaluate your options.
